Here’s what happened.<b> (And in case you just want to know about the spinal tap, I’ll answer it now in bold so you don’t have to read the rest of this - I didn’t feel a thing!)</b></p> <p>Thursday morning I woke up with the worst headache ever. I went to class but couldn’t stand it because the lights were making it worse. I went to work, same thing. Any light or loud sound made the already terrible migraine worse. The daylight hurt it, the TV hurt it, looking at my laptop hurt it…it sucked. I’d never felt anything like it before. In addition to that, my body was aching all over, my throat hurt, my ears hurt every time I swallowed and I was alternating hot and cold all day like I was Katy Perry or something.  I pretty much stayed in bed all day, and ibuprofen didn’t help at all. I was on duty that night (I’m an RA, in case ya don’t know!) but really couldn’t do it. I had no energy. The next day (Friday)  <a href="http://carinaavila.com/">Carina</a> came over to take care of me and brought me saltines, ginger ale, water and migraine relief pills. Those helped…for about 8 hours, at which point the migraine came roaring back, just in time for duty that night. I could only take them every 24 hours so the countdown began until I could take them again. Luckily it was quiet, and I basically just stayed in bed. I didn’t feel any better Saturday either, so I went to the CVS minute clinic. She was unsure what was going on and basically just said ‘if it gets worse, go to the ER.’ Sunday, it got worse, so my mom came to take me to the ER at Tufts because I could barely get myself out of bed, so there was no way I was gonna make it to the ER without some help. Light-sensitive migraine and stiff neck are two big warning signs for meningitis, and although I didn’t have a stiff neck, I did have meningitis when I was younger (I spent my first birthday in the hospital due to it) and that makes your risk a little bit higher, so the doctor decided to do a spinal tap. I have a low tolerance for pain (aka I’m a big fucking baby) so I was terrified. However, he numbed it up (to eleven) well, and that was all I felt, but it was very strange to know that he had a needle in my lower back that was taking fluid out (he let me see it after, it looks just like water) of the bottom of my spine. Thankfully, that came back negative, because a positive result would have meant a 10 day hospital stay. Then they brought me upstairs for a catscan, which revealed that I had really bad sinusitis. (So yes, had they done that first, I wouldn’t have had to get a spinal tap. If it had been painful, I would have been very angry, but since it wasn’t I didn’t really care that much.) We left the ER around 3am Monday morning. I’ve been home since then, and just today I’m starting to feel a little bit better. I’m on an antibiotic and have a nasal spray too. Today is the first day since last Wednesday that I can get out of bed and function somewhat normally.
